Taking care of your oral health is vital for a healthy smile, and even more so if you are struggling with a disease which can impact your mouth, such as diabetes. As you manage your diabetes effectively, you will want to take extra care of your teeth and gums to protect your overall health. Today, our dentist, Dr. Bryce Darden and Dr. Ronald Darden, want to share some beneficial oral care tips to help you manage your diabetes even better. Let’s take a look!

Our first stop is getting on the oral hygiene track. It is always important to brush and floss daily to foster a healthy oral environment. This simple daily routine will protect against tooth decay and gum disease. To nurture gums and tooth enamel, use a soft-bristled toothbrush as you clean, and if you are prone to cavities, use a fluoride toothpaste. Brush twice a day for two minutes each session, and floss at least once, many people find that bedtime is a good time to floss. Clean the crevices between the teeth and along the gumline, and if needed, rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash to lower bacteria levels.

Next on your oral care journey is looking out for your gums, as you want to prevent infection. If your gums bleed after you eat or brush your pearly whites, please let our dentists know. And if you discover white patches in your mouth or notice other unusual changes, we strongly encourage you to see your dentist for further evaluation. Protecting your gum health will support your systemic health as well.

And finally, when you have an illness such as diabetes, you will want to keep all routine dental cleanings and checkups. Hardened plaque or tartar needs to be removed from the teeth and gum line regularly to avoid decay and periodontal disease. Our dentists will inspect your oral cavity for dental problems before they become bigger issues requiring more invasive treatment. Please remind our staff that you are diabetic each time you come in, as we will make sure you receive the care you need to protect your healthy smile.
