When you have a dental implant, there are times when you might need a surgical dental procedure called a sinus lift, also known as a sinus augmentation. During the last 15 years, sinus lifts have actually become quite common as more and more people turn to dental implants to restore lost teeth.

At the dental practice of Darden DDS, conveniently located in Glendora, California, a sinus lift is performed by one of our skilled dentists, Dr. Bryce Darden or Dr. Ronald Darden.

What does a sinus lift do for your smile? This surgical dental procedure helps your smile by adding bone to those molar and premolar areas in your upper jaw area which will hold a dental implant in place. This is necessary if your oral cavity doesn’t have enough bone height to support a dental implant. This can happen when you have lost a tooth or have experienced severe periodontal (or gum) disease.

If this is the case for you, our dentists may advise adding bone to this area–between the maxillary sinuses and your upper jaw situated on either side of your nose.

How is a sinus augmentation performed? First, our dentists will carefully lift the sinus membrane away from your jaw. Once this area is exposed, our dentist can fill the area with bone-graft material. This material can be grafted from somewhere else on your body, which for obvious reasons of compatibility is the optimal choice, but if that isn’t possible, bone fragments from a tissue bank or artificial bone material can also be used instead.

What does the healing process entail? Healing from a sinus lift surgical procedure can take from four to nine months as the bone-graft material fuses with your natural bone. Once the area is ready for the dental implant itself, our dentists will place the implant into the bone.

If you have lost teeth and are looking for a permanent dental solution to restore oral function and appearance, a dental implant might be the right choice for you.
